A New Way to Think About Coding

Why couldn’t the programmer dance to the song? Because he didn’t get the algo-rhythm… hehehe

CodeAcademy is a great way to get your feet wet and figure out if coding is something you’d like to progress further in. It’s doing a great job at keeping me motivated, teaching me the basics, and showing me how it works. Although, so far it seems too easy. This might be because it is doing a lot of handholding through each section.

I made a hamburger!

It’s teaching me a lot of syntax and is explaining the material very well. It lets you go at your own pace, but also keeps you motivated to come back by letting you know when you have a “streak” (returning to learn day after day without skipping days). Each activity asks that you perfect it before moving onto the next, similarly with the end of section quizzes, I make sure to get 100% before moving on to the next section, although it isn’t much of an issue to get 100% the first try as the quizzes are pretty straightforward, covering only the section you have just learned.

Then I made a whole meal!

The nice thing about CodeAcademy is its layout is simple and colourful, it makes programming seem unintimidating.

Then… things got more complicated.

It is an engaging and interactive learning environment to at least understand the fundamentals. I know that eventually I’ll need to seek more information out somewhere, but until then, this is a fun introduction into the material.

Also… they’ve got jokes. Ha.

The only problem that I have seen so far with CodeAcademy is that it is easy to get wrapped up in simply completeing the activities and quizzes without actually learning, so I ensure to slow down, and really focus on whether or not I understand a concept before moving on.
